HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - A local animal shelter is joining others across Mississippi in pushing for tougher animal cruelty laws.
Southern Pines Animal Shelter hosted its first "Animal Advocacy Day" Thursday afternoon.
It was also held at other sites in the state.
Local legislators were invited, along with folks who want to see stronger penalties for animal cruelty or neglect.
"We're many months before the legislative session, so we're starting earlier, we'll be doing more outreach and I think helping educate the public," said Valerie Rachal, special projects manager for Southern Pines Animal Shelter. "We know public support is behind this, but we need to get them to also contact their legislators and let them know how strongly we all feel about it," she said.
Visitors were also invited to join an animal advocacy Facebook group.
