HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Three firefighters are now a part of the Hattiesburg Fire Department after being sworn in Wednesday at City Hall.

Ian Atkins and Alexander Redondo were two out of the seven who completed a 10-week training at the department's fire academy. The 10-week program challenged their mental and physical strengths.

"Our academy shows your strengths and your weaknesses," said Fire Chief Paul Presley. "They were mentally tough enough to stick it out and they were very dedicated and I think that they were two of our best candidates."

Redondo, a Hattiesburg native, said it has been a long time coming.

"This is the biggest thing I've ever done," he said. "I'm very proud."

Ian Atkins was born in New Orleans and raised in Bogalusa, Louisiana.

Sumrall native Matt Patterson was a rehire and the third firefighter sworn in.

Patterson previously served with the department for 13 years before working offshore.

He completed his academy training in 2000.

Presley said the addition of three firefighters brings the department's number to 87 of 120 positions allotted for.

The department is planning another academy in October and will be seeking new applicants.
