Jones County Sheriff's Department considering armored vehicle.
JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM) -
The Jones County Sheriff's Department may soon have an armored vehicle. The department is currently inspecting a 2005 Ford armored vehicle to purchase.
The full size 4x4 truck carries up to 12 passengers and has a gun turret on top and portholes on the sides.
"You can shoot gas canisters through the portholes, you can return fire from the portholes," said Maj. Jamie Tedford.
The department said it is leasing the vehicle and testing the mechanical side of it.
"We're trying it out to see if it would be something that we would need here at the sheriff's department for the citizens of this county," Tedford said. "Just with like the event that unfolded with the Dallas Police Department, you never know when you might need a piece of equipment of this caliber. If we have a situation such as what the Dallas Police Department just had, we would be prepared for that."
The department is also negotiating the price of the truck with a company out of Alabama.
Tedford said the cost of the vehicle will be paid with drug-seized money.
