MDOC commissioner challenges ACLU statement

This is a news release from the Mississippi Department of Corrections Office of Communications

Mississippi Department of Corrections Commissioner Marshall Fisher challenges ACLU National Prison Project Associate Director Margaret Winter's assertion that the department has not sought to protect state prisoners at Walnut Grove Correctional Facility.

"The court clearly said that we, as defendants, have made 'significant improvements' at Walnut Grove and to blatantly ignore that fact is disingenuous at best," Fisher said. "We are not sitting back."

Specifically, the court noted that MDOC has removed closed-custody inmates who contributed to the problems at the facility, has made "significant advancements with staffing," and "show a significant improvement in the number of assaults."

Earlier this year, MDOC lowered the number of inmates from 1,300 to 962 at the facility in Leake County.
