HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - A group of retired teachers and counselors have teamed up with the city of Hattiesburg's parks and recreation department to help a small group of young ladies during their time at summer day camp.
Each teacher shared topics such as cellphone etiquette, tips to improve personality and lifestyle, and how to have a positive attitude.
The girls were also given a book of their choice as well as a dictionary.
"We're trying to support what they are learning all along. Maybe enhancing some of the skills, some of the literacy opportunities that they get at home and in school but that you can never get enough of," said Betty Blanding, a former teacher.
The group believes that literacy is an imperative for female teens.
Next week the group will be helping more young ladies at Hawkins Elementary during their summer day camp.
