Conservation/recreation group to host clean up of Chickasawhay this weekend

WAYNESBORO, MS (WDAM) - A newly-formed organization which promotes conservation of and recreation on the Chickasawhay River is hosting a first-ever clean up event in Wayne County this Saturday.

Dozens of people are expected to join the Friends of the Chickasawhay to take part in a clean up float from the Highway 184 Boat Ramp to Highway 63, south of Waynesboro.

The event begins at 9 a.m.

Participants will pick up tin cans, plastic bags and other items from the river and the riverbank.

"I think it's the right time to do it," said Drew Walker, chairman of  Friends of the Chickasawhay Paddle America Club. "We have a lot of great people here in Wayne County that are interested in our river, have love and appreciation for our river," he said.

Also on June 27, the Friends of the Chickasawhay will host a 20-mile float race on the river from Shubuta to Waynesboro.
