Southern Pines Animal Shelter has plenty of adorable pets ready for adoption.
"For most people, summertime is about vacations and spending time with family," said Katherine Sammons, operations manager. "But for an animal shelter, it's the time where our intakes really ramp up."
Sammons said that, on average, the shelter gets between five and 20 animals a day. Southern Pines is offering summer deals to encourage folks to adopt pets and make room for incoming animals.
June is Adopt a Shelter Cat month so the shelter is waiving adoption fees for fixed adult cats.
If you're looking for a friend with a wagging tail and a wet nose instead, then you're in luck! Each day a staff member picks their favorite dog to highlight on their Facebook page and that pet's fees are waived. To visit the page, click here.
Each cat or dog that comes through the shelter is spayed or neutered and receives vaccinations. This costs hundreds of dollars per pet and the shelter thanks sponsors and donors for making it possible. Foster families also make a huge difference, Puppies and kittens spend time in homes until they're old enough to be adopted. "Adoption should always be everyone's first option," said Sammons. "There are so many deserving animals here at our shelter and all of them are here through no fault of their own. So many are looking for a second family to call their forever home."
And that family could be you.
