HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Pearl River Community College bids a farewell to retiring Vice President for Forrest County Operations, Dr. Cecil Burt.
Dr. Burt grew up in Brooklyn, Mississippi and graduated from FCAHS. He earned an associate's degree from MGCCC. Burt also has a bachelor's from MSU, and a masters from The University of Southern Mississippi.
"Education has been a wonderful career, it's like being in the ministry, it's a calling," said Burt. "A lot of friends and family, so it's a celebration in a way, but it's sad in a way, because I'm going to be entering a new phase of life. I'm looking forward to that but I hate to leave my friends behind."
Burt started out as a counselor at the Forrest County Center, then became Career Technical Education Director, to his current position as Dean of the Center. He has overseen a campus that has grown from a few hundred students to 2,000 students.
"I don't take credit for any accomplishments here," Burt said. "We have great faculty, and we've always had a great student body. I've always said the key to success in this is hiring people who are qualified or who are even smarter than I am, getting out of their way and letting them do their job."
As far as how he plans to spend his newly found free-time, Burt seems to have it figured out.
"I will be doing more church work, spend more time with my grand children, and hunt and fish I hope," Burt said.
