PETAL, MS (WDAM) - The city of Petal will sponsor a new farmer's market that will begin on Saturday, June 20, and every Saturday thereafter. It will take place behind the civic center at Hinton Park and will run through around the end of October. Hours of operation will be from 8 a.m. until noon each Saturday.
The farmer's market has been in the works by the Health Committee of Petal for awhile. The Mississippi State Department of Health is working with the city of Petal in making the farmer's market possible. Hal Marx, mayor of Petal, said there is a need for fresh fruits and vegetables from his city's residents.
"Well it's important because people, it's a need, people want access to fresh fruits and vegetables, they want something locally grown," Marx said. "The farmers of course, need a place to sell their products, and they want to sell locally. If they're growing on a small farm, and they have excess, instead of letting it go to waste, they can sell it and make some money."
Marx said area farmers have already met with the Health Committee to arrange the farmer's market opening on June 20.
