JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - A Jones County man has been charged with aggravated assault and arson.

Mark Jones, 37 of Laurel, went before Justice Court Judge David Lyons on Wednesday for a disturbance that occurred Saturday. He faced three charges including his bond for the charge of arson in the first degree set at $25,000. He also faced a bond for felony domestic assault set at $10,000 and a bond for weapon possession by a felon. The bond for the weapons charge was set at $10,000.

Jones is being held at the Jones County Adult Detention Center in Ellisville.

Jones County Sheriff deputies were dispatched to a residence on Hopson Traylor Road for a disturbance Saturday evening. The complainant, who called from a neighbor's home, reported that her husband attempted to stab her with a knife. While en route, deputies were informed that the complainant's home was on fire. When deputies arrived, the flames had engulfed the residence and Jones was not on the property.

According to officials, the victim said her husband was intoxicated and a verbal argument ensued. The argument turned violent when Jones grabbed her, choked her and then chased her with a knife in an attempt to harm her. During the assault, Jones threatened to shoot the victim.

Police said the victim fled to a nearby location and witnessed Jones enter their home with a gas can. Moments later, she noticed smoke coming from her residence. Witnesses reported Jones leaving the scene shortly after.

While the fire was being contained, deputies observed Jones coming back to the residence. He was then approached and arrested. During the on-site investigation, the knife Jones used was located and a gun was recovered.
