HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

A student from The University of Southern Mississippi will be awarded a scholarship by the National Athletic Trainers' Association Research & Education Foundation Scholarship Committee.

Alex Pfefferle, a senior athletic training major from New Orleans, has been selected to receive the NATA District Nine Patty and Chuck Kimmel Scholarship. She will be recognized during the Pinky Newell Scholarship and Leadership Breakfast at the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA) Convention in St. Louis, Mo., June 26.

“Alex is a great student and very deserving of this prestigious scholarship,” said Dr. Bill Holcomb, associate professor and director of the Southern Miss Athletic Training Program. “She has excelled as an athlete and a scholar, and we anticipate more success during her final year in the Athletic Training Program. This scholarship was a great investment.”

Pfefferle is a defensive specialist/libero for the Southern Miss volleyball team. She completed her term as president of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and was recently elected president of the Athletic Training Club. Pfefferle is a member of the Gamma Beta Phi Honor Society and Golden Key International Honour Society, and has lettered four years on the Southern Miss volleyball team. After graduating, Pfefferle plans to attend physical therapy school.

“I chose to study athletic training because I've always known that I wanted to be a medical professional, and being a collegiate athlete, I was already familiar with the demographic of the athletes I would get to work with,” said Pfefferle. “It is a profession that allows me to excel in a sports medicine field while ultimately working towards my goal of going to physical therapy school.”

The Patty and Chuck Kimmel Scholarship Endowment was established in 2013 by the Southeast Athletic Trainers' Association District Nine to honor former NATA President Chuck Kimmel and his wife, Patty, for their dedication to the athletic training profession. It provides an annual scholarship of $2,300 to a qualified athletic training student from District Nine.
