HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Memorial Day is celebrated every year on the last Monday of May, and honors those who gave their lives to protect this country. It honors the brave men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice to defend our freedom.
For some, Memorial Day weekend signifies the beginning of summer vacation. However, for most people, the weekend represents so much more.
Pine Belt residents understand what Memorial Day is really about, and wanted to give thanks to those who served and died for them.
Carolyn Newell lost a friend in the Vietnam War and expressed how important Memorial Day is to her.
"I just want to thank those men and women who didn't come home to a ticker tape parade," said Newell
There will be a National Moment of Remembrance this afternoon at 3 p.m.central time.
