LUMBERTON, MS (WDAM) - The Lumberton Volunteer Fire Department now falls under Lamar County's belt after the Board of Supervisors approved the transfer of protection Thursday.
"The county has made a lot of advances in the last few years with training and staffing, and it will put them in the same category as the county department, so they won't have to come up with their own fire department, training programs, or staffing programs," Lamar County Fire Coordinator George Stevens explained.
LVFD does not currently have a full-time, paid staff, which is something Stevens said he hoped would change now that it falls under the county.
The board also approved Mike Staff as fire chief for the department. Stevens said Staff currently serves full-time at Southeast Lamar Volunteer Fire Station, and he previously served full-time at the Biloxi Fire Department for several years.
Stevens said these changes should be a good thing for the department in Lumberton, and he said residents should be encouraged that the new chief will work to increase the volunteer staff.
