HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - The City of Hattiesburg and United Blood Services worked together Thursday to increase the blood supply for the upcoming Memorial Day holiday.
They hosted a blood drive at the Sherrill Community Center in honor of law enforcement officers.
The goal was to get at least 15 units of blood of all types.
"We want to honor what they do every single day by making other people heroes because when you donate blood with United Blood Services, you are a hero to a patient in our hospital that's in need," said Katie Martin, a donor recruitment representative with United Blood Services.
"I just wanted to come out and support, and anything we can do to help, we're here to support," said Johnny Jackson, a donor who's a fire marshal with the Hattiesburg Fire Dept.
"Anything I can do to show my support for them and their families and in support of all the other law enforcement agencies here in Hattiesburg and anywhere else, I'm willing to do whatever I can," said Ronnie Gibson, another donor.
United Blood Services is also hosting a special blood drive called, "Scrub for Blood" Friday at its offices on S. 28th Ave. During that event, donors will get a free car wash, a T-shirt, hamburgers and hot dogs and free movie tickets, while supplies last.
