HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Students at Runnelstown School in Perry County have said thank you to area law enforcement officers in a special way.
Tuesday afternoon, they hosted an appreciation ceremony on the school's football field.
They presented certificates to members of several police and sheriff's departments and released dozens of black and blue balloons in memory of officers who've lost their lives in the line of duty.
Many of them also carried signs reading, 'thank you.'
"Well, we wanted to support and show our love to the police officers for what they've done for us," said Larissa McCardle, an 8th grader at the school.
"After this last week's memorial services and funerals, it means a lot to us," said Jimmy Dale Smith, sheriff of Perry County.
"We just a appreciate so much the outpouring of support we've had this past week," said Leonard Fuller, chief of the Petal Police Dept. "It makes you feel good about coming out and doing your job on a daily basis," he said.
Officials from about a half-dozen agencies attended.
