Senior citizens strap on their dancing shoes for prom

HATTIESBURG, MS - Seniors attended their prom on Tuesday. Senior citizen prom, that is.

The Jackie Dole Community Center hosted the event and folks showed up dressed to the nines, ready to cut a rug.

"This is a joint venture between the city of Hattiesburg and several senior living communities," said Jean Claire Monroe, director of public relations for Lamar Health and Rehab. "Socialization and mental stimulation are some of the biggest thing that our seniors need."

The prom's theme was Old Hollywood and the live swing band made for a toe-tapping good time. Corsages and boutonnieres were pinned, photographs were taken, and memories were shared.

"My high school prom was really nice," said Anne Mixon. "We just celebrated our 62nd class graduation this year."

"That was in '46," said Alice Cooper. "That's too many years ago to remember!"

And for some, the senior citizen prom was even sweeter than the one they attended in the high school gymnasium all those years ago.

"A little bit more thrilling, a little more tug on the heart," said Edward Cox.
