Chase Scott named Conference USA Hitter of the Week

This is a news release from Southern Miss athletics

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Southern Miss junior leftfielder Chase Scott (Hampton, Ga.) has been named the Conference USA Hitter of the Week after extending his hitting streak to 21 games with five extra-base hits and nine RBI in four Golden Eagles win, helping aid in the team's current winning streak to 13 games.

Scott hit safely in all four games during the week to extend his team-best hitting streak to 21 games, the longest since 2013 for the Golden Eagles. It also ties for the eighth-longest hitting streak in school history.

Although he registered only five hits during the week, they were all for extra bases and all had impact in helping the Golden Eagles four victories during the week.

Against Tulane, he belted a pair of doubles with the second one clearing the bases in a six-run fourth inning. He finished a five-run, fifth-inning in the Middle Tennessee opener to extend his hitting streak with a three-run homer - his fourth of the year. In the first game of the doubleheader in the final day of the regular season, he walked his first time up before tripling to centerfield, another bases-clearing hit, to cap a four-run, third-inning that helped the Golden Eagles to another victory. In the final game of the series, he doubled right on the leftfield line to keep his streak alive.

He had a trio of three-RBI games and scored a total of five runs. Southern Miss is 17-4 during his hitting streak and he is hitting .337 (28-for-83) with 20 runs, seven doubles, a triple, four home runs and 20 RBI over that span.

The award is the first weekly honor for Scott and the first C-USA Weekly hitting honor for the Golden Eagles since Mason Robbins won the award on April 28 of last year. Southern Miss has also won the weekly pitching award five times this season.

The C-USA Pitcher of the Week honor went to FIU freshman RHP Andres Nunez, who threw seven shutout innings in a series-opening victory at No. 13 Rice that secured a berth in the C-USA Championship for the Panthers.

The Golden Eagles (35-16-1) are back in action this week when they open the C-USA Baseball Championship, presented by Petro Nissan, Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., at Pete Taylor Park.
