Osher Lifelong Learning Institute Offers Special Summer Events

LONG BEACH, MS (WDAM) - The following is a news release from The University of Southern Mississippi
The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Park Campus in Long Beach will offer a full schedule of events for the Summer Session. In addition to 40 classes, seminars, field trips and special events during the summer semester, a couple of events are new and unique on the schedule.
Online registration opens May 18. Walk-in registration at Gulf Park is May 19 & 20 from 10-2. Registration is open up to and including the first day of the class. These new events include Sailing Under the Black Flag: Golden Age of Piracy; Cyber Savvy Seniors – OLLI Tech Day, and Summer Salads and Sangria.
Facilitator Tony Rhodes will offer a two-part penetrating review of real pirates, not necessarily those who looted and vanished. “We think we know pirates; we learned about them in Peter Pan and movies,” Rhodes said. Rhodes will offer a look at ‘real' pirates: how they fought, lived and died.
The seminar will also deal with the truth behind the myths, fairy tales and Hollywood-inspired images. He will explore the lives of real pirates, such as Francis Drake, Blackbeard, Captain Kidd and even lady pirates, Anne Bonny and Mary Read. Capt. Rhodes asks all to come along as he sets sail on the Spanish Main during the Golden Age of Piracy. OLLI members can bring children 3rd grade and up with them. June 23 and 25; $16 for two, 2 hour sessions.
An all-day workshop, Cyber Savvy Seniors- OLLI Tech Day, will be offered June 19th at the Gulf Park Campus. This all-day workshop features a variety of topics and a computer lab staffed with techs who can help students with your basic questions.
A sampling of the popular topics will include use of smart phones, social media, purchasing online and internet safety. Specific sessions will deal with purchasing a using Google, Computers 101, Skype, online banking, Facebook, applications for volunteer leaders and more! Don't miss this one day tech bonanza! Jim Hinton, owner of Pastry Garden at Gordon Creek, in Downtown Hattiesburg, will host a seminar dealing with Salads and Sangria. Chef Hinton invites all OLLI members to beat the hot weather, with his cool favorite salad and sangria recipes Thursday, June 25 at 6 p.m. $18, includes prepared meal.
OLLI offers programming geared toward individuals 50 years of age or older, with any level of education, working or retired. The premise behind OLLI is that learning at any age is fun and a great way to keep mind, body and, spirit healthy. All offerings are presented in a relaxed atmosphere with break time to socialize.
Describing the OLLI atmosphere, Becky Vinzant, OLLI Director said: “OLLI members are adults with wide-ranging interests who enjoy learning without having to take tests, write papers or receive grades. Not only do they enjoy learning, they also enjoy exploring together on field trips and gathering together informally after classes for lunch or dinner.”
