HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Funeral services for fallen officer Benjamin Deen were held at Temple Baptist Church in Hattiesburg Thursday morning.

Thousands gathered for the service, including police officers from New York, Ferguson, and around the Pine Belt.

Frank Misenhelter, HPD assistant chief spoke at the service on behalf of the Hattiesburg Police Department.

"BJ was good people," Misenhelter said. "Saturday night I lost a brother."

Misenhelter along with Deen's pastors remembered him as a 'good ole' country boy.'

Deen was also recalled as someone who would always be your friend. Stories of him fixing a broken door with a string, saving a family from a house fire, and winning Officer of the Year in 2012 were just some of the many memories shared during the service.

Singers brought the room to tears with a rendition of "Amazing Grace," and "Go rest high on that mountain."

As funeral attendees began to file out of the service, thousands paid their respects by lining the streets with American flags, posters, and blue ribbons.

Some of those who lined the streets spoke of the bravery and sacrifice of police officers.

"We do not think about our policemen and what they do for us, and here's two young lives struck down, just doing their jobs," Sara Phelps said.

"I've made a promise that every time I see a cop I'm going to pray for them, and shake their hands," Robin Strickland added.

"We need to pay tribute to the people who risk their lives every day for us," John Shamburger said.

He is survived by his wife, Robin Deen of Sumrall; parents, Mary Ellen and Dan Deen of Hattiesburg; one son, Walker Deen of Sumrall; one daughter, Melah Deen of Sumrall; one sister, Candi Deen Sylvester of Sumrall; one brother, Joshua Allen Deen of Hattiesburg; grandmother, Lorene Aultman of Hattiesburg.

Officer Deen was laid to rest at Military Baptist Church in Sumrall.
