HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Four suspects are facing charges for the death of two Hattiesburg police officers. Two of the suspects are brothers, Curtis and Marvin Banks.
"I feel bad for the family, but you've got to realize they're still my two," said mother of Curtis and Marvin, Mary Smith. "I'm sorry for their family."
Smith said her 26-year-old son Curtis claims he's innocent.
"I talked to Curtis," said Smith. "Curtis said he didn't have anything to do with it, I don't know how Curtis got involved with it, but he said he didn't have anything to do with it."
As for her 29-year-old son Marvin, Smith said she believes drugs may have been a factor in his decision to shoot both officers.
"I just hate it, I hate it," said Smith. "He just needs some help. He got on them drugs; he got on that spice while he was locked up in prison. I tried everything to get him to Pine Grove."
She said she tried to get Marvin to seek treatment for his drug use.
"He wouldn't go," said Smith. "He said he was hearing voices and I tried to get him some help and I couldn't. The people on Facebook they making him be a monster, but he's not no monster, he's a good child, it's just the drugs have him."
Smith said color plays no part in the shooting.
"It's not no racist thing," said Smith as she cried. "They need to stop with all these comments cause you don't know what went through his head; you don't know what went through my child's head."
Regardless of everything, she said in the end they are still her children.
"I hate it happened, but we don't know what goes through anybody's mind," said Smith. "They're still my children, I still love them and I'm sorry the tragedy that happened."
