Beckett Grand Marshal-Distinguished Professor for 2015

University of Southern Mississippi biology professor Dr. David Beckett is serving in the role of Grand Marshal-Distinguished Professor, an award recognizing a senior faculty member who has excelled in teaching, research and service.
The Southern Miss Grand Marshal-Distinguished Professor is chosen by a committee representative of the University community. Beckett will serve as Grand Marshal at commencement ceremonies for one calendar year, including in the May and December 2015 graduation exercises in Hattiesburg and on the Gulf Coast.
“It means a great deal to have been selected,” Beckett said. “I've had a wonderful career at Southern Miss, and feel blessed to have lived it.”
Beckett is currently in his 30th year as faculty member in the Department of Biological Sciences. His research activity focuses on river and stream ecology, cave ecology, the study of diverse aquatic invertebrate communities and vertebrates such as bats and gopher tortoises.
In addition to his teaching and research, Beckett has also served as president of the Faculty Senate and chairman of the University Faculty Handbook Committee. He received the College of Science and Technology Outstanding Faculty Service Award in 2009 and 2015. In 2010, he was the recipient of the University Excellence in Service Award.
