LAMAR COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - Members of the Lamar County Sheriff's Department participated in a torch run to increase awareness and raise funds for the Special Olympics.

Officers made their way from the sheriff's department down Shelby Speights to Highway 11 where they headed south carrying the Flame of Hope.

"Special Olympics holds a special place in my heart and all of my deputies hearts also, so I really appreciate them supporting the Special Olympics," said Lamar County Sheriff Danny Rigel.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics is the movement's largest grass-roots fundraiser and public awareness event.

The event will be held May 8th, at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi.

It's a great cause and I really appreciate them taking time out and carrying this torch," said Rigel. "There are a lot of officers across the states that are participating in this and we are just very proud to be a part of it."
