Everyday man spreads message of kindness

LAUREL, MS (WDAM) - Not all heroes wear capes or can leap tall buildings in a single bound.

One particular hero would never call himself that and instead refers to himself as a "regular redneck from Laurel, Mississippi."

John Tower is spreading kindness through the Pine Belt by meeting the needs of those around him. Sometimes that need is a tank of gas or a restaurant gift card, other times it's money for a single mother or a job for someone who is out of work.

"The message is really simple," said Tower. "The message is to be nice. Apparently it's a new thing. When I was coming up it was the thing you were supposed to do but now it makes you exceptional. So I think we should all be exceptional if that's what it takes to be exceptional."

Tower has been promoting this message for the last month through his Facebook page, "the self checkout lane." His "likes" are soaring toward a thousand as more and more folks rally behind his cause. He asks people to notify him if they or someone they know have a need or are in a bind. Then he does his best to help.

Though he'd never admit it himself, those who have been helped by Tower would certainly consider him a hero.

"It's not about me," said Tower. "It's about us."
