The U.S. Travel Association announced that May 2-10 will be the 32nd Annual National Travel and Tourism Week. The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) supports National Travel and Tourism Week, and wants to encourage the public to get out and see all that our state has to offer.
Nationwide, travel supports 15 million jobs. In 2014 travel and tourism generated $2.1 trillion across the nation, $927.9 billion of that was in direct travel-related spending.
As you get out and explore some of Mississippi's unique travel destinations, MDOT has free resources available to help you get where you're going faster and safer.
is a great tool to get any road trip started with. With live camera feeds from across the state, you can check the traffic before you hit the road.
also has alerts for construction, closed roads, weather-related events and incident alerts. The map even shows the locations of rest areas and welcome centers throughout the state. You can create a free account and customize
to how you travel.
The MDOT Traffic app is available for free in the App Store and Google Play store, and serves as a companion to
. The app, just like the website, has access to real-time traffic alert information and cameras across the state. The app will sync with your account on
and only send you alerts on your preferred driving routes. The app will send you alerts in either a text message, email or push notification.
Another valuable resource is Mississippi 511. By dialing 511travelers can get updates on travel information and road conditions. Mississippi 511 is constantly updated with information that is important to the traveling public. You can get specific road information by simply saying the name of the road, city, county or region. The 511 system even allows travelers to report traffic conditions if they haven't been already.
