HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Organizers of a first-ever, Community Garage Sale to benefit Hattiesburg's Field House for the Homeless are calling it a success.
Volunteers for that organization say more than $20,000 was raised during the three days of the sale, which ended Saturday afternoon.
Donated furniture, clothing, housewares and electronics had been for sale at the event, which was held at the old Barry's Granite building in Lamar County.
All the funds will be used to purchase basic household items for "starter kits" for homeless folks to use when they find a new apartment.
"I really thought if we got $1,000, we'd be doing good," said Danette Bean, chairperson for the Community Garage Sale. "And then, I upped my goal to $5,000 and then, I upped it to $10,000 and OK, $15,000 and that's the max, and I shouldn't have put a limit on what God could do for the Field House, because he showed up and showed out big time," she said.
The Field House for the Homeless opened in early 2014.
