ELLISVILLE, MS (WDAM) - The best and brightest from high schools all over south Mississippi were honored Friday at the annual Top of Class event. Valedictorians and salutatorians from nearly 50 area high schools attended the festivities hosted by Jones County Junior College and WDAM.
"We're here to celebrate your success," said Jesse Smith, JCJC President. "You have done so well that the opportunities you have are limitless. I hope you pick the path that you are most passionate about."
The exceptional students are all offered a full ride scholarship to JCJC. Many plan to attend while some of their peers have set their sights on other universities across the state and even the country.
"My parents always taught me to do my best and I've always tried to do that in everything I do," said Nick Sciortino of Oak Grove High School. "And it's showing in my schoolwork, I hope," he added.
It certainly is showing in his work. Sciortino just received the distinction of Top All-Star Student in Mississippi. This honor is decided by ACT score but after three students tied this year, grade point average was used to determine the winner.
"It's a really good feeling knowing that I worked hard all this time and these are the results," said Meghan Williams, a senior at North Forrest High School. "It feels really great."
Best of luck to all the graduates! No matter what college they attend or major they select, these young men and women have bright futures ahead of them.
