Crusaders cruise past Bethel in SSAC Tournament opener

Montgomery, Ala.- William Carey University opened play in the 2015 Southern States Athletic Conference tournament with a 5-1 win over Bethel University in first round action Wednesday afternoon at Paterson Field.

After stranding a pair of runners in the first inning, WCU went to work on the Wildcats in the second inning. Larson Barkurn (SO/Petal, Miss.) led off the inning with a double and Charlie Belair (FR/Belle Chase, La) followed with a single that scored Barkurn to put Carey up 1-0.

In the third inning Michael Wells (SR/Niceville, Fla.) added to the Carey lead with a RBI single and then Barkurn and Belair struck again. Barkurn added a RBI single and Belair drove in a pair of runs to cap a four run third inning and put WCU up 5-0.

Gavin Culpepper (SR/Belle Chase, La.) was on cruise control scattering eight hits in seven innings of work to pick up the win.

Tyler James (FR/Slidell, La.) led WCU at the plate going 3 for 5. Tyler Richardson (JR/Bluff City, Tenn.), Larson Barkurn, and Charlie Belair each added two hits. Belair drove in three runs on the day.

With the win the Crusaders will take on the winner of Faulkner/ Brewton Parker tomorrow at 4 pm at Paterson Field.
