LAUREL, MS (WDAM) - About three dozen people attended a conference in Jones County Saturday that helped parents of children with autism.
The 3rd annual Parent Forum at the Laurel Train Depot brought parents, educators and experts together to share experiences and learn more about autism. It was held in recognition of Autism Awareness Month.
"Every 11 minutes, a child is diagnosed with autism, so what we want to do is bring awareness," said Melody Jones. Her child, Rylan, has autism. "It's everywhere, so we want people to understand it, we want people to accept it and not look at it as something they should shy away from, but in fact, something they should embrace and something they need to learn more about," she said.
Jones' organization, for Rys sake: Autism in Action, co-sponsored the event. Another support group, K's Quest, also helped organize the forum.
