This is a news release from William Carey athletics
Hattiesburg, Miss. - Brandt Bourgeois (SR/Marrero, LA) fired a three hit shutout as William Carey University wrapped up the 2015 regular season with a 3-0 win over Belhaven University on Friday afternoon at Milton Wheeler Field.
With the win WCU takes the final NAIA regular season meeting between the two longtime rivals. On Thursday night Carey defeated Belhaven 14-0 but dropped the nightcap 10-4.
Bourgeois set the tone for the game in the first inning as he struck out three Blazers and eventually fanned 10 on the day.
Belhaven starter Tanner Moulder was every bit Bourgeois equal for the first six innings but in the 7th the Crusaders finally got to the righty from Hendersonville, Tennessee.
With the bases loaded and one out Michael Wells (SR/Niceville, Fla.) chopper was just out of the reach of the Blazer second baseman and led to a pair of runs to put WCU up 2-0. Nick Lowe (JR/Satsuma, AL) followed with a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Tyler James (FR/Slidell, La.) for the final run of the day.
Bourgeios worked out of a few jams through the first four innings but settled into a groove and retired the final 14 Blazers he faced.
Wells led WCU at the plate going 2 for 3 with 2 RBI's.
WCU returns to action next Wednesday in the 2015 Southern States Athletic Conference Tournament at Patterson Field in Montgomery, Alabama. The Crusaders will be the number three seed next week and first round opponent will be announced on Saturday.
