HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Blue Bell Creameries has pulled all of its products off store shelves, after two samples of its ice cream tested positive for listeria.
The voluntary recall affects its ice cream, frozen yogurt, sherbet and other frozen snacks in 23 states and foreign countries.
Each year, there are about 1,600 listeria cases in the U.S., accounting for about 200 deaths.
One local physician says consumers can take steps, in most cases, to prevent contamination in their food.
"These events are very rare, hopefully this outbreak will be under control very soon," said Dr. Luis Marcos, an infectious disease specialist with Hattiesburg Clinic. "People have to know that they have to wash their food, their fruits and vegetables with water, and make sure to eat cooked meat and avoid any uncooked meat," he said.
Marcos says Hattiesburg has only had two listeria cases in the last two years.
