Mississippi ceremony on April 24th honors legendary writer

This is a news release from the U.S. Postal Service

On ,Friday, April 24 at 11am there will be a ceremony at the East South Street post office in Jackson, Mississippi for the Maya Angelou stamp. Nationally released with a First Day of Issue April 7, the Maya Angelou Commemorative Stamp has been one of the most anticipated and popular commemorative stamps in the 2015 Postal Service program. The iconic poet was a writer who grew to symbolize and convey the thoughts and feelings of a nation and its people. She committed her life to ideas that elevated our sense of what it means to be human, and to advance understanding, compassion and reconciliation.

Dr. Angelou found her voice through literature…and poetry…and the spoken word. And she used her voice so passionately, for so many pursuits, and achieved so much. She was an author who broke down the barriers of literary form. Not only was she a poet, she was also an educator, a historian and a filmmaker. And she touched millions, many of them in Mississippi, where she will be officially welcomed and feted.

Maya Angelou stamps and souvenir envelopes will be available for purchase following the ceremony.
