Weather Channel tornado special premieres tonight

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - The Weather Channel is set to air a special on the February 10 tornado that swept through Hattiesburg and Petal on April 27 at 8 p.m.

Producer Kim Kanther said the dramatic one hour series will keep viewers on the edge of their seats.

"It's different and so fortunate for an EF-4 to go through a populated area and have no one die," said Kanther. "That was actually a good story angle for us."

The special titled "Tornado Alley, real-time Hattiesburg, MS" will feature the EF-4 tornado that moved through Lamar, Forrest, and part of Perry County.

Victims of the tornado, as well as first responders, and media will be featured.

"News people in this particular series are so important to us because they are there before, during, and after," said Kanther. "That's their job and they're the line that helps us follow the story."

Show producers have warned that show times may be preempted in case the Weather Channel has to cover severe weather during scheduled air times.

The special will also re-air on Monday, May 4 at 9 p.m.

"I think the story telling in this one was unique in that we were able to give great news at the end," said Kanther. "As opposed to tragic numbers that no one wants to hear."
