HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - 17 members of the Hattiesburg Fire Dept. have been rewarded for their service and dedication by receiving promotions.

It happened at a ceremony at the Sherrill Community Center Thursday night.

Four men were promoted to battalion chief. They were Barry Collins, Mike Davidson, Talmus Russell, and Robert Stephens.

Personnel promoted to captain were Mike McSwain and Kelvin Patrick.

Jeff Williamson, Jimmy Morgan, Jay Riels, Dwayne Martin and Danny Wade were promoted to lieutenant.

And those promoted to engineers were Bryan Burson, Robert Hall, Brent Chennault, Phillip Adams, Walter Green and Tony Gaumer.

The department currently has 90 sworn personnel and is approved for 120.

"Even though we've had some attrition over the years due to guys going off-shore (and) other fire departments taking them, so that's the thing now, but the guys that are here, they're very dedicated to the job," said Paul Presley, Hattiesburg Fire Chief.

Seven new firefighters should be joining the department in mid-May, after they complete the city's training academy.
