PETAL, MS (WDAM) - The threat of bad weather this weekend has prompted organizers of an annual showcase of Southeastern Native-American traditions and culture in Petal to move most activities indoors this year.
The Petal-Southern Miss Pow Wow will take place as planned Apr. 16-19, but, because of the likelihood of steady rain, much of it will happen inside the Petal Middle School gymnasium.
It will feature American-Indian arts and crafts, dancing and other interactive activities for local residents, free of charge.
Thursday, the Pow Wow kicked off with "school day" for fourth grade students at Petal-Harvey Baptist Church.
During that event, children took part in hands-on activities such as face-painting and drum-making. They also listened to story-telling.
The Pow Wow is hosted by the Southern Miss Golden Eagle Intertribal Society, the Center for American-Indian Research and Studies, the Petal Chamber of Commerce and the City of Petal.
