Longleaf Trace gateways are getting facelifts

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Officials with the Longleaf Trace Organization received donation Tuesday morning to complete a much needed update to the Jackson Road Gateway.

During March's board meeting, Herlon Pierce, executive director for the organization, received a check for $10,000 from the Plum Creek Foundation to go toward building a new parking lot at the station that will hold around 80 vehicles.

"With this parking we can now move them [vehicles] a 100 yards off of Jackson Road, and we won't have that problem of parking up and down Jackson Road creating the additional hazard above the parking lot itself," Pierce said.

In past years, the currently small parking lot was a safety issue for outdoor enthusiasts and residents living in the area.

According to Pierce, a 50 car parking lot with handicap entrances will be built at the Gateway Southern Miss station on West 4th Street in Hattiesburg. The project was paid for from donations from local residents, organizations and sports enthusiasts. It is expected to be complete in May.
