Shepherd's Tent hosts food drive

LAUREL, MS (WDAM) -

During the two weeks of April 13th through April 23rd Jones County School District, Laurel School District, Laurel Christian School, and the City of Laurel is partnering with Shepherds' Tent Food Pantry for their countywide food drive. All food collected by the schools and the city will be donated to Shepherds' Tent Food Pantry to provide emergency food assistance for Jones county families with children in need.

Please send canned and dry, non-perishable foods with your child to school. There will be a designated drop-off place at each school. The school that collects the most by the end of the two week period will be awarded the “Ladle of Hope” Trophy.

All residents of Jones County is asked to drop-off food donations at the following designated locations in Laurel: Cameron Center - 711 N. 10th Ave. and L. T. Ellis Center – 610 Munson St.

Shepherds' Tent countywide food drive will culminate with:

CHILDREN HEALTH DAY IN THE PARK

Saturday, April 25th – 10:00 a.m.

Mason Park Pavilion – 7th Ave. Laurel

The mayor of Laurel, Johnny Magee, and our state auditor, Stacy Pickering, will be in attendance for the awards presentation and to speak to the young children and teens; and, Dr. Tibbs, a well respected local pediatrician, will be speaking on childhood obesity prevention and awareness. Additionally, Family Health Center is partnering with Shepherds' Tent to offer free wellness screenings. Outdoor activities for the children are scheduled including a 1 mile walk/run/bike. There will be prizes, refreshments, and much more! You don't want to miss this historic event!

Shepherds' Tent Food Pantry

Shepherds' Tent Food Pantry is a non-profit charitable organization established on February 13, 2015 for the purpose of providing short-term food assistance to low-income families with children in need by providing a box of groceries containing a 3 day supply of food for well balanced meals. The service area is Jones County; the goal is to serve one hundred families each month.

The organizations operations are governed by its board of directors: Haile Gaddy, Curtis Heck, Helen Smith, Aric Peppers, Bo Edlin, and Betty McCarthy. The CEO of Shepherds' Tent Food Pantry is Haile Gaddy.
