Crusaders finish off sweep of Martin Methodist on Military Appreciation Day

Hattiesburg, Miss. - William Carey University celebrated Military Appreciation Day with a doubleheader sweep of Martin Methodist College on Saturday afternoon at Milton Wheeler Field.

Prior to the start of game two, William Carey University and Crusader Baseball honored local veterans and active military as part of Military Appreciation Day presented by the WCU School of Business Leadership Institute. Over 50 current and former military service members took part in the ceremonies.

In game one Larson Barkurn (SO/Petal, Miss.) was solid on the hill as the Crusaders (24-19, 15-9 SSAC ) defeated the RedHawks (21-14, 10-11 SSAC ), 7-3.

The sophomore from Petal improved to 5-2 on the season as he scattered six hits, three runs, and struck out five in a complete game seven inning effort.

After a 1-2-3 top of the first inning, the Crusaders went to work in the bottom of the inning. After a leadoff triple by Cody Christian (JR/Satsuma, Ala.), Tyler James (FR/Slidell, La.) followed with a RBI single to give Carey their first lead of the day. Carey continued to pour it on in the inning as Michael Wells (SR/Niceville, Fla.) drove in James and Barkurn helped his own cause with a RBI single to score Tyler Richardson (JR/Bluff City, Tenn.) to make it 3-0 WCU.

The RedHawks trimmed the lead with a run in the second inning and then tied the game in the fourth with a pair of RBI singles by Blake Truett and Caleb Patterson.

Carey retook the lead in the bottom of the inning as Chris Miller (JR/Slidell, La.) stole third and advanced home on a RedHawk error to put WCU up 4-3. The Crusaders stretched the lead in the fifth inning as Jordan Anderson (JR/Olive Branch, Miss.) drove in one run with a RBI double and WCU added two more runs on back to back wild pitches for the game's final runs.

Barkurn remained poised and worked out of a jam in the sixth and then retired the side in the 7th to end the game.

In game two the Crusaders rallied from a three run deficit to finish off the sweep with a 7-4 win.

The RedHawks scored two runs in the first inning and added another in the top of the third inning to open a 3-0 lead.

Carey erased the Martin Methodist lead in the bottom of the third inning. A leadoff double by Ramon Cedeno (SR/Orlando, Fla.) followed by a single by Charlie Belair (FR/Belle Chase, La) put runners on the corners with no outs. Cody Christian stepped to the plate and scored Cedeno with a RBI single to cut the lead to 3-1. Tyler James scored Belair with a infield bunt RBI single and then Tyler Richardson tied the game with a RBI sacrifice fly.

Richardson struck again for WCU in the fifth inning with a two run RBI double and Michael Wells followed with a RBI single to score Richardson and put WCU up 6-3.

The RedHawks cut the lead to 6-4 with a run in the 8th inning but WCU got the run back in the bottom of the frame on a RBI single by Tyler James.

J.D. Little (JR/Destin, FL) then worked a quick ninth inning to end the game and pick up his fourth save of the season.

Brandt Bourgeois (SR/Marrero, LA) picked up the win allowing six hits, three runs and struck out seven in 7 1/3 inning of work to improve to 4-7 on the season.

WCU returns to action on Tuesday at home as they take on Mississippi College. First pitch is set for 6:00pm at Milton Wheeler Field.
