HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Camp Shelby Joint Forces Training Center has a new commander.

He's Col. Gregory S. Michel of McComb.

Michel assumed command during a ceremony at the post Saturday morning.

He takes over for Col. William B. (Brad) Smith, Jr., who led Camp Shelby for three years. Col. Smith is also retiring from the National Guard after 33 years of service.

"I want to continue to capitalize on the opportunities that exist," said Michel. "We're a premiere training site. There are a lot of opportunities out there to bring more business into Shelby, and that's what I want to do," he said.

"It's been an incredible adventure, going from a mobilization station that was a major economic driver in this area, back to the premiere training center in the country," said Col. Smith. "It's been a big transition. It's been a lot of fun," he said.

Michel first enlisted in the Mississippi National Guard in 1988 and was commissioned as an officer through the Army ROTC program at Southern Miss.
