PETAL, MS (WDAM) -

Petal officials were presented with a generous donation for the Petal River Park on Wednesday.

The Leaf River Cellulose, a subsidiary of GP Cellulose, donated $10,000 to the Petal Chamber of Commerce to help the city complete construction of the new park.

Officials said the money will be used to enhance the bike trail, build entrances and create a parking lot.

City officials announced the opening of the Petal River Park March 28. It sits on 70 acres of land on the bank of the Leaf River off of Highway 11.

The park was built to provide residents with a sustainable system of trails that support multi-use, non-motorized recreational activities including walking, hiking and biking in a natural and protected environment.
