JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - The Mayor of Madison was in Jones County Wednesday for a republican women's meeting.
Mary Hawkins Butler is currently serving her ninth consecutive four-year term as mayor and is now running for state auditor.
She was the guest speaker at the Jones County Republican Women's meeting and said the state deserves better and she's going to do the job herself. If elected she said Mississippians will see a difference in accountability.
"We cannot be selective in who we audit, we need to do away with sole-source contracts that got us in trouble with the Mississippi Department of Corrections that has gone on for years and years that should have been caught," said Butler. "If you look at a lot or most of the investigations, these are federal investigations, they were not initiated, the big ones, at the state auditor's office."
Butler told attendees that she loves her job, but said she wants to stop all the corruption in the state.
