Laurel murder victim identified, suspect sought

LAUREL, MS (WDAM) - Laurel investigators have identified the man they say was shot multiple times Easter Sunday near the 1800 block of Lindsey Avenue. William Cooley, 27, was pronounced dead at the scene and police are now looking for the man responsible for his death.

"We're currently looking for an individual identified as Irving Lee, 31-year-old black male with ties in the New Orleans area," said Sgt. Michael Reaves. "He's our primary suspect in this area."

Police believe Cooley and Lee may have known each other.

"We've determined that the incident may have stemmed from an earlier altercation in the day," said Sgt. Reaves. "The two individuals did have prior knowledge of each other that is not to say that they were friends, but they did know who each other were."

Sgt. Reaves believes Lee may have also stolen a car from the Laurel area. The vehicle is described as a gold Nissan Sentra with Mississippi tag number JPP-964.

"We believe that he possibly left our area in that vehicle so obviously anyone that has knowledge or sees that vehicle we need to be contacted immediately," said Sgt. Reaves.

Lee is considered armed and dangerous. If you have any information on his whereabouts you are asked to contact the Laurel Police Department or Crime Stoppers at 601-428-STOP.
