LAMAR COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - During the Lamar County board of Supervisors meeting District Two Supervisor Warren Byrd asked the board to consider taking over the Lumberton Fire Department.
Byrd said the City Council of Lumberton is willing to give up the department, and he believes the board should take it over to insure people have an efficient fire protection and rescue.
“When they call with that 911 problem or issue or someone needing help or rescue, you know, someone needing help because their house is on fire,” said Byrd. “These people will be able to feel confident that there is someone in the area who will respond in a reasonable amount of time.”
If the board votes to take over the fire department, the city will give the board the excess funds in their account to help the board start the new fire department.
“I think the city of Lumberton has about $20,000 which they would give us,” said Byrd.
Byrd hopes that the board will take on the Lumberton Fire Department and to eventually get someone to be a full-time staff member at the department.
