An Ohio man is going to prison for failure to support his child, announced Attorney General Jim Hood today.

John Kelly Fields, 35, of Hamilton, Ohio, pleaded guilty and was sentenced Monday for Felony Non-Support of his child before Forrest County Circuit Court Judge Bob Helfrich. Judge Helfrich sentenced Fields to five years in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections with two years to serve and three years suspended on supervised probation. The Judge also ordered, and the defendant paid, $51,500 that he owes in back child support.

"We thank Judge Helfrich for reminding our deadbeat parents that they will be held accountable in Mississippi,” said Attorney General Jim Hood. “If they force our hand, we will track them down in or out of the state and make them do the right thing.”

The case was prosecuted by Special Assistant Attorney General Elliott Flaggs, Director of the Attorney General's Child Desertion Unit and investigated by Kynda Walker.
