Ground breaking of Backstrom Park

LAMAR COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - The Mississippi Department of Transportation, Neel-Schaffer, and Lamar County Board of Supervisors celebrated the Ground Breaking of Backstrom Park on Friday, March 27.

The $400,000 dollar Lamar County park bears the name of long-time District 1 Supervisor Mike Backstrom.

"It means a great honor to me, especially them naming it after me, but the main thing is that this is for the children or the area and the county," said Backstrom.

The park will include a walking track and playground equipment. A $300,000 grant cam from the Mississippi Department of Transportation with a $100,000 match from  the county.

"I think this means a lot to the community and all of the people that will be using it. The money came from TAP, a transportation attorney program, which is a hundred perfect federally funded," said Transportation Commissioner Tom King. "At MDOT be provide eighty percent and the supervisors provide twenty percent."

Backstrom Park will be located at the Oak Grove optimist Park located hegwood Road.
