LAMAR COUNTY, MS (WDAM) -

The Lamar County Sheriff's Department will host a free firearms class for citizens.

The class will be held on May 9th beginning at 8 a.m. at the Lamar County Community Shelter at 99 Central Industrial Row, Purvis, MS, next to the Lamar County Multi-Purpose Center.

“We will go over the nomenclature of the weapon, the safety features of the weapon, familiarize yourself with the weapon, and then we will actually do some range time where we will teach you gun safety on the range, and basically how to shoot,” said Lamar County Sheriff Danny Rigel.

Rigel asks that participants bring your own weapon as well as ammunition for the class. Instructors will also be on hand to be sure the weapons are usable, and fully functioning.

This class is designed for beginners and covers topics such as firearms safety, gun laws, and the fundamentals of marksmanship.

“It's not an advanced course, it is for beginners, but it is to familiarize people with a gun,” said Rigel.

The class will be limited to ensure safety to participants as well as adequate time for one on one instruction. To reserve your spot contact the Lamar County Sheriff's Department or visit the Lamar County Sheriff's Department facebook page.

“It's going to be a good experience for anyone who wants to come, and just learn about shooting a weapon as well as proper safety,” said Rigel.

Department officials added that if the class fills up, they have to get another course scheduled later this year for members of the community.
