LAMAR COUNTY, MS (WDAM) -

Members of the Lamar County Sheriff's Department sniper team returned home with second place honors after the North American Sniper Championship.

Officers Matt Nunnaly and Chris Regan brought home second place honors in the multi-state competition for the two-man sniper team held in Southaven from March 16th-19th.

The competition includes law enforcement personnel from different agencies as well as National Guard members from across the region. Officers get the chance to practice their skills, learn new methods and the latest innovative training methods for crisis situations.

“Their winning is just another testimony to their skills and professionalism,” said Lamar County Sheriff Rigel.

Rigel stated that the department uses the snipers for multiple things and they are trained in a variety of special areas.

“They are used for surveillance, to see and not be seen, high risk warrants, or some locations where we have to put eyes on the suspect before making an arrest, it's a safer method than normal for both officers and citizens,” said Rigel.

Sheriff Rigel noted how proud he was of his department and what an asset the team is to the entire county.
