HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

This is a news release from the University of Sothern Mississippi.

Hundreds of students from The University of Southern Mississippi's Hattiesburg and Gulf Park campuses provided volunteer services as part of the 6th Annual Big Event on Saturday, March 21.

The students fanned out across various sites in Hattiesburg and along the Gulf Coast to assist with painting, landscaping, cleaning, organizing and related services.

Ben Burkett, sophomore business administration major from Ft. Walton Beach, Fla., said that being able to give back to the campus and community creates a sense of pride.

“I love my Southern Miss and being able to not only give back to Southern Miss, but to the community that supports and gives us so much, it gives me a sense of accomplishment,” said Burkett.

Said Kyler Isabelle, junior psychology major, from Birmingham, Ala., “This is a one time of year thing, so it's special to me. I've been helping out for the past four years. Giving back to Hattiesburg is really the least we can do. The city has done so much for campus, so just being able to give back to Hattiesburg has just been awesome.”

The Big Event is sponsored by the Student Government Association at Southern Miss.
