UPDATE: Body found in Lamar County

LAMAR COUNTY, MS (WDAM) -

Authorities are investigating the discovery of a body found Sunday afternoon in a wooded area of Lamar County.

Lamar County Sheriff Danny Rigel said the body was discovered around 3:30 p.m. near the 2500 block of Rocky Branch Road.

“The body was found off a creek bank, and the person who found it called authorities,” said Rigel.

Rigel added that the area the body was found was hard to access due to the surrounding saturated ground, as well as the swampy area.

“There was no weapons found around the body, or the scene, and from what we could tell, there is no apparent or visible trauma to the person, and no foul play is suspected” said Rigel.

According to Sheriff Rigel, they are pretty sure they know the identity of the person, however the advanced stages of decomposition have prompted an autopsy and dental records will be used to make a positive identification on the person.

Rigel said it appears to be an older male, but the state of the body made it difficult to tell.

Rigel added there is a missing persons report on file with the sheriff's department but until the autopsy report comes back, the department will not know for sure.

“Even though we don't suspect any foul play, and until we get the autopsy that states the cause of death, we can't rule anything out,” said Rigel.

Rigel added the body was sent for an autopsy today.

Currently, Lumberton High School senior safety C.K. Bowens acts as a de facto coach-on-the-field for Coach Zach Jones’ defense. And if Jones’ has his way, Bowens will become a coach on his staff some day in the future. “Somebody’s fired,” Jones said only half-kidding. “He has a job because I would hire him in a minute. He just has a way of getting his point across and people listen. He’s just a natural leader.”
