Lady Crusaders take two from Bethel in SSAC Action

Hattiesburg, Miss.- No. 9 William Carey University improved to 5-1 in Southern States Athletic Conference play as they swept Bethel University in doubleheader action on Friday afternoon at Joseph & Nancy Fail Field.

In game one, Brittany Lang (JR/Biloxi, MS) scattered seven hits and four different Lady Crusader's collected two hits each as WCU defeated Bethel, 4-1.

WCU went to work right away in the bottom of the first inning loading the bases with no outs. Kimberly Gilbert (FR/Saucier, Miss.) started the scoring for Carey with a RBI single to score Relanda McFarland (SR/Shubuta, Miss.) and WCU added to the lead moments later when Cecilia Lawn (JR/Meridian, Miss.) scored on a Wildcat error to put WCU up 2-0.

Carey added to their lead in the fifth inning as Chelsea Nette (JR/Slidell, La.) and Lindsey Webb (SR/Vancleave, MS) each drove in runs to stretch the WCU lead to 4-0.

Lang was solid scattering seven hits and issuing just two walks to improve to 7-3 on the year. The only real trouble Lang got into was in the seventh when the Wildcats loaded the bases with no outs. Lang then struck out Hannah Clifton looking and got the next batter to ground into a 4-6 force out which led to the first run WCU had given up in their last 19 innings. Lang then got the final Bethel batter to pop out to second to end the game.

In game two, Hannah Cook-Kelley (SR/Phoenix, AZ) went 4 for 4 with three RBI's as Carey cruised to a 7-0 when.

The WCU offense was relentless in game two collecting 12 hits and scoring a run in six of seven innings.

Leading 1-0 in the bottom of the third inning WCU blew the game wide open as Cook-Kelley ripped a two run triple to centerfield to put WCU up 3-0. Kimberly Gilbert followed with sacrifice fly to score Cook-Kelley and cap a three run inning by WCU.

Carey then scored runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings for the final margin.

Hannah Moak (FR/Ruth, Miss.) fired her second straight shutout allowing just four hits and striking out 7 to improve to 7-2 on the season.

WCU returns to action tomorrow as they host Martin Methodist College in SSAC action. First pitch is set for 1:00 pm at Joseph & Nancy Fail Field.
