COLLINS, MS (WDAM) - A new fire insurance rating for the City of Collins could mean substantial savings on insurance costs for homeowners and businesses. City officials have learned their fire insurance protection rating has been lowered from a Class-6 to a Class-5.
That means residents could save up to 10 percent on their homeowners policies, while business owners could save up to 15 percent on their insurance.
The new rating follows a recent inspection of the Collins Fire Dept. by the Mississippi State Rating Bureau.
"It takes a lot to be able to achieve a new rating," said John Pope, chief of the Collins Fire Dept. "Some areas that we excelled in was that we did add additional full-time personnel on staff for the department (and) we also added new apparatus, we placed a new engine company in service," he said.
Other Mississippi cities with Class-5 ratings include Laurel, Pearl, Brandon, Bay St. Louis, Waveland, Richland, Senatobia and Cleveland.
